Victoria Prejean

Function and symmetry are the driving forces of my work. Just like the functional and ethereal gothic cathedrals that house hope and reverence, I create functional wheel-thrown work that preserves and honors my memories of family and the abstract self. The potter’s wheel provides me with the means to create the symmetry that I love. Both forces drive me to create pieces that are harmonious and aid in the daily lives of people, and not take them away.

I use a variety of smooth earthenware and stoneware clay bodies that I use the wheel to create various parts that I will combine to create extravagant forms. I will alter the shapes of the various pieces, add decorative elements, and fire them multiple times.

My use of decadent ornamentation and painted surfaces pays homage to 18th-century Sevrés porcelain ware. I use underglazes and china paints to bring life to my pieces. The preciousness of these memories or concepts is then highlighted with luster. Each vessel I make whether it be a frilled teapot, a floral-infused tea cup, or a lustrous urn, is embedded with a story.

Victoria Prejean is a ceramic artist based in Silver City, New Mexico. Prejean primarily creates functional wares from a high-fired clay body and sometimes works on low-fired sculptural pieces. Her focus on memories delves deep into her personal life of experiencing loss in her late teens and how there was no preparation for what death entailed. Prejean’s goal is to create art that starts conversations surrounding grief and memories that bring comfort, not fear. She has had work featured in the 2022 PEACE Exhibition and in the 2023 GRACE: Expression through CLAY Exhibition. She was also featured in the Westerner publication.
